Ignorance is defined as a lack of knowledge and is known to be negative most of the time. Knowledge is defined as information, skills, or familiarity and is known to be positive most of the time. I believe that to be ignorant in 2014 is irresponsible and leads to intercultural conflict. In order to remedy this problem, we must as a society educate ourselves in the ways cultures differ around the world. I believe that the best way to improve our knowledge is to educate ourselves in cultural competence. Cultural competence is defined by Segen's Medical Dictionary (2011) as, "The ability to understand, appreciate, and interact with persons from cultures and/or belief systems other than one's own, based on various factors". The United States is the most culturally diverse country in the world and in order to reduce our ignorance, we should increase our education about other cultures. Cultural competence affects many aspects of our world including but not limited to education, health care, and business.
